the bees knees

I got stung by a bee at the wedding. Because of course I did. In all other ways, the wedding - and the weekend - was just really lovely. The ceremony took place outside, under a tree overlooking Lake Travis and the reception was wonderfully laid back and simultaneously elegant. I'm always amazed when people pull off that combo. I'll admit I got a little choked up during the ceremony. The groom is on my List of People I Like Best and it made me a little verklempt to see him so happy. But then I got stung by a bee and stopped being verklempt and started being, well, puffy.

Earlier in the week, I got bit by a spider. Again, because of course I did. And it wasn't much more than an annoyance until the whole bee incident. And then, after the bee did his thing and it crossed some sort of venom threshold, the spider bite on my inner arm that was the size of a quarter grew and grew until yesterday, when I took my angry red, tennis ball sized owie to my doctor. She poked, prodded and then drew a black line around the red halo on my arm and said, if it gets bigger, call me. Then she loaded me up with antihistamines and antibiotics and sent me on my way. I've been obsessively checking that line ever since. It's a new hobby.

Insects and arachnids aside, we had such a fantastic weekend with Stephanie, Phil and their pint-sized scalawags. Oh, to hear three-year-olds say scalawags! I was endlessly delighted by the things that came out of their mouths. Then there was grown up time, which was mostly about putting things in our mouths - like, wine and bread pudding and this thing called drunken bread. I didn't make it to boot camp yesterday. I'm still recovering. For the Dork Lord and me, it was the perfect way to celebrate our first year together*. You know, minus the bees and spiders and such. Or the part where the Boy left his wallet at home in Dallas. Or where I forgot to pack deodorant. But I guess 'perfect' is sort of a relative thing.

Ok aplogies all around. Sorry I brought it up!

I love the gaggy picture, so cute!

Sorry to hear about your been sting - once again you remind me of myself. We get going on a good track and then something beyond our control and having to do with spiders comes and messes it all up.

I hope the line gets smaller soon!

okay so this post made me happy - happy to know we all have imperfect versions of perfection - and that pic was fantastic. It really made me smile. Congrats on 1 year of togetherness. And I just started the 30 day shred - thanks for that too. ugh!

Heather, long time reader/lurker here. But I just had to post, you look fabulously happy in the picture! And The Boy, he's a handsome catch, lucky girl. Forgetting his wallet, that was an innocent mistake right? lol Glad you had a great time at the wedding and celebrating your year anniversary! Congrats!

ps. I've heard that putting a penny on a bee sting is suppose to help them, the copper in the penny somehow draws the venom out. *shrugs* probably to late for that though.

Yay for gaggy happiness. You are a lovely couple and I hope you have many years of truly disgusting love and joy.

adorable picture. you fit perfectly in that spot right next to him:)

so on a scary note...please keep an eye on that bite. my daughter's boyfriend just spent 2 weeks in ICU because of a bug bite that turned in to a gnarly drug resistant staph infection.

Starlene,

That's EXACTLY what I was worried about. So far, mine seems to be responding to the antibiotic. The MRSI is my worst nightmare.

Very cute picture! You guys look great together. :) Glad you had a nice time in Austin...it was a lovely weekend here. I'm dealing with multiple bug bits of my own right now, so I feel your pain. Flea bites? spider bites? ant bites? Who the heck knows..I just want them to stop itching.

Absolutely Wonderful! Bee sting and spider bite aside :) Thanks for sharing the picture so we can visualize such happiness instead of imagining it like we usually have to do.

The gaggy photo is great. Happy anniversary to you and DL. I am allergic to ant bites but it is a lot more serious than most people comprehend.

1) I'm sorry to hear about the venomous critters that can't seem to leave you alone.

2) That picture is gorgeous!

3) I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for correctly identifying that bees and spiders are venomous, not poisonous, and for using the word arachnid correctly in a sentence. I work as a teacher at an invertebrate zoo, and am constantly educating folks on these concepts. You were well taught!

The picture is lovely, thanks for sharing. Although I have to admit to feeling a bit let down that the dork lord doesn't look as I'd pictured him... A bit like watching your favourite book when it's nade into a film and the hero doesn't look like your image! But I'll be honest and admit he looks better than his nickname had let me to picture!
Although I have to admit to a

I'm so happy for the two of you! The photo is super cute and I agree with everyone else that the happiness just shines off of you both. Congrats on 1 year!

Fish - it's MRSA, not MRSI. Unfortunately for you, you've got all types of professions out here reading.. so you got the spider thing right, but not the drug-resistant bacteria. Teehee. Anyway, staph infections are bad either way, MRSA isn't more serious than the others, it just requires a different kind of antibiotics. Hope you get better!

you and the boy look fan-freaking tabulous. I'm glad that you're happy. and much sympathy with the bites. I get hives all up whatever limb gets bit by mosquito. Bug bites are pretty much the worst.

Marcy said:

You two glow together. Wonderful!

Awwww! I'm feeling simultaneously melty and barfy now :)

Re bites and stings, did your doctor also tell you this incident may have sensitized you to future bites and stings and that your next reaction might be less puffy and more anaphylactic? Which is not to alarm you but is to remind you to mark the line yourself next time and don't wait so long to start the histamines*

*Fine print: this is not actual medical advice. My husband is the doctor, not me.

Oh he's cute! VERY cute :)

Oh man, I feel your pain! Right before I came back to visit my family in California, I got bit by some kind of gnarly spider in Australia (thank goodness I didn't actually see it as all are spiders there are big, hairy, and mean). I, too, had to do the circle around the bite to see if the swelling and redness was spreading and after nearly a week of toughing it out (because who goes to the doctor for a stupid spider bite?), my pharmacist freaked me out by telling me there are some spiders in Aus that will make your flesh die and you can end up losing a limb. A treatment of antibiotics later, I'm all cured, but I do have a wicked looking scar.
